I am so glad that God is not a Target Red Card! I've worked at Target for a few months now, and I have to say that I have this whole Red Card thing memorized. "Hi, how are you? Would you like to save 5% today and everyday?" Don't get me wrong; I'm a believer that a Target Red Card is a good thing and that everyone should take the chance to sign up because 5% off is a good deal. Not to mention all the other benefits that include extended return policy, free shipping, etc. (See, I told you I have it memorized). Also, please keep in mind that your cashier is a human being, and the conversations we have with you are not just a means to an end. We generally do care about people, otherwise, we would have quit ages ago, honey. Okay. Target rant done.
You see, as much as I appreciate my work, it feels good to wake up to my last day before my leave of absence. Interactions as a cashier can sometimes get old, and feel fake, and it is oh so easy to feel like selling a Red Card is pointless at times. And that's why I'm glad that God is not a Red Card. He is not some piece of plastic that ultimately nobody would want without the 5%. No, God is amazing at saving us, AND He is so much more than just some numbers, stories, touchy feeling vibes that we share with the world.
I look forward to Africa more and more, as December begins and January nears. I also look forward to days when my job will be selling Jesus, rather than garments and groceries. Now, to clarify, Jesus is not something to be sold, it's just word play folks. How freeing will it be to only have to live for Christ with no other agenda? Yet, shouldn't we be living life this way everyday of our lives, regardless of our day job? Shouldn't God be our day job, full time, no lunch break? I have to wonder how freeing life could be if we lived for Christ, and had a job on the side, rather than making God the appetizer and our careers the main course. Just some food for thought...
(I like puns, can ya tell?)
